NYC Life

This page will contain musings of my quest to get back to New York City to complete my final year of college. I will post general advice and tips about surviving and thriving in NYC here as well.

Topic #1- The Essential New York City Wardrobe and Accessories

For the fashion conscious college woman moving to NYC a great wardrobe is a must. But you don't have to spend a fortune to look chic and put together. Below is my ultimate NYC starter wardrobe.

1. Two great pairs of dark indigo or black designer skinny jeans and boot cut jeans.
2. A few great long sleeve and short sleeve tee shirts in a flowy or relaxed, soft fabric such as cotton jersey.
3. Drapy long scarves.
4. Slouchy hats for when it gets a bit chilly.
5. One pair of black ballet flats.
6. One pair of flat heeled black leather knee boots.
7. One chic carry all tote to haul everything you'll need for the day.
8. One fitted black "everyday" blazer that you can wear as your regular jacket.
9. A couple of chic, relaxed fit dresses: one in a drapy, flowy material and cut and the other in a stretchy material and slightly fitted cut.

New York Wardrobe & Accessories Essentials

The brands mentioned here are just suggestions since the same basic styles can be found at all price points. You can find American Apparel on sale on its website and designer jeans can be purchased on sale and clearance anywhere. My favorite places to look for designer jeans and others items in NYC were Loehmann's and Filene's Basement. At Loehmann's I bought a great pair of J. Lindeberg women's skinny jeans (which seem to be very rare, at least in the U.S. anyway, but the women's line is available through J. Lindeberg's European online store). The skinnies that I bought were around $120 regular price but I scored them for $30! Aside from that, I generally love the Gap for all my denim needs because they fit perfectly and have a great selection of petite pants.

As for the Tory Burch Classic Reva Ballet Flats mentioned, they can easily be substituted with more affordable shoes such as Me Too, which are so cute and chic. Same with the Longchamp Le Pliage tote, which can be substituted for a less expensive version of another brand, think LeSportsac (at reduced prices in Ross or Marshall's).
